I read the following article:
http://www.artbusiness.com/osorgrants.html
The main thing that I found out from reading this is that in order to get residencies and grants for art, you must have first exhibited and presented your art in public and had some sort of involvement with art communities. The advise of the article was to do plenty of this without being paid before attempting to apply for grants and residencies.
This makes me think that in my last blog I was slightly naive to think that I could find another big residency, like the one offered in Berwick, straight out of uni. However I still think I should keep looking for opportunities to get moving image work out into the public without money.
I think I should try my best to promote the one Super 8 film per month for six months idea as best as I can and fund it myself and also think of other film and moving image related stunts that could get me more recognised and generate interest in my work.
One idea that I had was to work for fine artists who might need the assistance of a camera person who knows how to use film formats like Super 8 and 16mm and promote myself as more of a technical assistant to artist who are interested in these things. I own my own Super 8 camera and should be investing in a Krasnogorsk 3 16mm camera very soon.
Moving forward I think I will look more at the following:
- How to promote the Super 8 film per month for 6 months project; including whether magazines (local ones, but perhaps others as well) will interview me about it.
- Increasing exposure by using things like Instagram.
- Working as a camera operator/cinematographer/whatever for either small time filmmakers who have some sort of investment to employ a camera person, or for fine artists who might want someone who can use film to help them with their work (see if there is actually any demand for this).
- Corporate work. Advertisements, Corporate videos etc.
- Promotional videos for bands (Is there any money in this on a level that I could access? If not it might still be good for promotion)
- Research more opportunities.
